With its feared bite and scarey appearance, the black widow spider is an nightmare come true. It hunt by night, waiting patiently in the middle of it's web for its next victim. Only the female black widow is venomous, its poison is thought to be fifteen times more toxic than that of a rattlesnakes. To feed, it stabs prey with its fangs and injects a liquid. This turns the prey's insides to mush four the spider to suck up. When it bites, only a small amount of venom is released. When adult humans are bitten, it is rarely fatal. Despite a feared reputation, it is a shy spider and usually stay hidden in its web.
The adult female has an "hourglass" marking on her underside. She shows this bye hanging upside down in her web to ward off potential predators. Did you know the female occasionally kills and eats the male after mating.
